These figures make me ill ..
Last
October, Philadelphia, metropolitan area of 6.1 million and located a scant 80 miles from New York City and other mega population areas hosted the WBF WORLD BRIDGE SERIES! A 16-day extravaganza attended by only 913 US citizens – over two & a half weeks!
For this management (with our approval) forked over $100 grand and the USBF threw in much more. And we paid another $165,000 for the right to play in their tournaments plus supporting all their delegates. The WBS ended with WBF owing the hotel a fortune.
Last month, Mesa, Arizona, population 500,000 in a metropolitan desert area of 2.5 million held a 7-day regional attended by 1500 US players during their 2557 table tournament – almost 600 more members in less than half the days than the WBS. And it was a limited regional – 55+ seniors.
Mesa? Well, they sent their sanction and director fees in to ACBL.
There is a message here. When do we address the issue of WBF truthfully, and how do we face our constituents with such waste of their money on an organization we were not elected to support? When do we stop the bleeding? I am embarrassed I voted to toss in the $100 grand, I didn’t do my homework ... I never will do that again.
