Subject: Phil Clayton's Letter

Ken,

Phil accuses you of circuitous logic.

His e-mail states "Just because I can't swim 100 meters in 44 seconds, or can't run 100 meters in 9.3 seconds, does that mean that I shouldn't contribute to funding athletes that can? I view the USBF in the same vein."

No one discourages contributions to the US Olympic Committee and I have seen them appeal on television for support.  Contributions to the USOC are purely individual and voluntary.  However, by virtue of the ACBL board's decision, the ACBL membership is being "taxed" to support the USBF for the benefit of a few top competitors.  This contribution is not voluntary as are any contributions to the USOC.  Applying the Phil's logic to the USOC would mean that all those competing in local high school athletic programs should be forced to pay a buck or two to help fund our Olympic teams.

It seems to me that in a representative democracy it is entirely appropriate for the general populace to discuss and dissent the actions of its representatives.  Keep up the good work!

Regards,
